We are excited to begin May with the launch of a new six-month feasibility study project under the National Materials Innovation Programme, funded by Innovate UK.

The feasibility study, titled Market-driven Opportunities for Sustainable Agricultural Innovative Construction Composites (MOSAIC-Composites), will explore the development of next-generation bio-based construction materials derived from agricultural residues and wetland crops.

At AGREKA BUILD, we are developing a new generation of rigid construction boards made from blends of wheat straw and wetland crop residues sourced from paludiculture farms — a form of wetland agriculture cultivated on rewetted peatlands. These crops thrive in waterlogged environments while contributing to carbon sequestration, biodiversity enhancement, and land restoration.

Combined with wheat straw, an abundant agricultural by-product, these materials are being developed into low-carbon, healthy, and domestically produced alternatives to conventional construction panels. The project forms part of our broader mission to support the transition towards regenerative and circular construction materials in the UK.

With the UK government targeting the delivery of 1.5 million new homes during this Parliament, the need for material diversification and resilient domestic supply chains has never been greater. Through MOSAIC-Composites, we aim to contribute towards a more sustainable built environment while creating new value streams for agricultural residues and wetland farming systems.

We would like to thank University of East London and Natural Building Systems for their support and collaboration on this project. More updates will follow over the coming months as the project progresses.
